I am beginning to imagine otherworldly perception (and to a certain extent 'presence') as when multiple senses combine and you can't point to one thing you're getting a feeling from.

During the famous dance scene in 8 1/2 where the young energy is being contrasted with the old, there is a cutback to a couple leaving the dance floor that is so strangely otherworldly to me that I struggle to convey, even to myself, what is it that is creating the atmosphere. I don't think it is just the surprise of them cutting back to the elderly couple after starting the new sequence, or holding it for so long. It's something about the composistion and them walking away...
